About TCREI

Advancing the science of fibers and the practice of high‑end textile care, for the manufacturers, designers, and producers who create them and the qualified cleaners trusted to preserve them.

Our Story

The high‑end textile industry has a gap. Furniture manufacturers, area rug designers, and textile producers spend years perfecting their products, choosing specific fibers, constructions, and dyes for very specific reasons. But the science behind those choices rarely makes it into clear, field‑ready care protocols. And the cleaners trusted with those textiles often lack the advanced training needed to handle premium materials with confidence.

TCREI was founded to close that gap.

The Textile Cleaning Research and Education Institute exists to connect the people who design and build high‑end textiles with the qualified cleaners trained to care for them, so the original design intent and performance of every textile is preserved throughout its life cycle.

Our Mission

The Textile Cleaning Research and Education Institute (TCREI) teaches and supports high‑end furniture manufacturers, interior designers, and textile producers by breaking down the science of fibers into practical, real‑world knowledge. Through research‑based education, we help them understand how different fibers, constructions, and dyes behave under use, cleaning, and protection, so they can design and specify textiles with realistic care expectations. We then translate this knowledge into clear, tested cleaning protocols that can be taught to qualified, high‑end cleaners, ensuring that the original design intent and performance of these textiles are preserved throughout their life cycle.

Our Vision

We envision a high‑end textile industry where manufacturers, interior designers, and textile producers specify their products with full understanding of how those products will perform in the real world. Where showroom teams and sales representatives can confidently guide clients on care. And where qualified cleaners, trained on tested protocols, deliver results that preserve the original design intent on every job.

Who We Serve

TCREI serves two sides of the same industry.

Manufacturers, Designers, and Producers. Furniture manufacturers, interior designers, textile producers, showroom teams, and sales representatives who need practical, research‑based knowledge of fiber behavior, plus field‑ready care protocols and qualified cleaners they can trust with their products.

Qualified Cleaners. Carpet cleaners, area rug specialists, upholstery technicians, and drapery care providers who want to operate at the highest level of their craft and be trusted with high‑end, designer, and manufacturer‑specified textiles.

Our four areas of focus are carpets, area rugs, upholstery, and drapery.

Our Objectives

  • Conduct research on how fibers, constructions, and dyes behave under real‑world use, cleaning, and protection.
  • Translate that research into clear, tested cleaning protocols for high‑end textiles.
  • Educate furniture manufacturers, interior designers, and textile producers on the science of fibers so they can specify textiles with realistic care expectations.
  • Educate showroom teams and sales representatives so they can confidently advise clients on proper textile care.
  • Train qualified cleaners on inspection, cleaning, and fabric correction across all four focus areas: carpets, area rugs, upholstery, and drapery.
  • Operate a tiered training path so cleaners can build expertise from foundational fiber knowledge to master‑level practice.
  • Partner with manufacturers, designers, and producers to develop realistic, field‑ready care and maintenance protocols for their products.

  • Support ongoing professional development across the high‑end textile care community.

Organizational Structure

TCREI is organized into four divisions, each playing a critical role in connecting fiber science with high‑end textile care.:

Research & Development Division

Our research team studies how fibers, constructions, and dyes behave under real‑world use, cleaning, and protection. We test cleaning techniques and agents, then translate the findings into tested cleaning protocols. Every protocol goes through a quality review process before being adopted as an official TCREI protocol.

Education & Training Division

Our curriculum is built on TCREI research and designed by experienced industry practitioners. We deliver education to two audiences. For manufacturers, designers, producers, and sales teams, we cover the practical science of fibers and how to specify textiles with realistic care expectations. For qualified cleaners, we deliver tested protocols through online courses, live workshops, and hands‑on sessions, structured around our four‑level training path.

Professional Development Division

Learning does not stop at the end of a training program. TCREI supports ongoing growth through advanced coursework, webinars, a mentorship program that connects emerging practitioners with seasoned experts, and a growing resource library of fiber research, case studies, and technical materials.

Operations & Administration

Our administrative team manages enrollment, training records, and member support, keeping the institute running so our members can focus on their craft.
